Hubert T. Howell
NOTES: Hubert T. Howell, son of William Martin Howell and Eva Knight. In his younger days, Hubert was a well known local moonshiner. In his later years, he was featured in the books “Mountain Spirits” and “More Mountain Spirits,” both by Joseph Dabney. Charles Kuralt interviewed him for his “On The Road” series and used that interview in his book by the same name. He is also mentioned, along with fellow moonshiners John Hardin and Lloyd Seay, in the book The Dukes of Hazzard By David Hofstede. In 2008, his story was part of the Bartow History Center’s “Revenuers and Rumrunners” exhibit.
