| Old Macedonia Cemetery
Bartow County, Georgia
|
| The Old Macedonia Cemetery was established in the mid-1800s.
There are currently over 500 grave sites located there. Land next to the
cemetery was recently acquired for expansion.
The Abernathy and Summey families of North Carolina were among those who settled in Bartow (formerly Cass) County, Georgia in the late 1800s. The community, located in the Stamp Creek district, became known by many as Macedonia. (It was also known by some as Abernathyville.)
Macedonia was one of several communities bought |
|
| of Engineers to build Lake Allatoona and the Allatoona Dam along the Etowah River. The families were allowed to remain until the dam was completed in the late 1940s. Because of the cemetery's location, it was not necessary to relocate the existing graves. However, a new road was built because the road from the church to the cemetery was flooded out by the creation of the lake. | ![]() |
Many of the descendants of the original
settlers still live in Bartow and the surrounding counties. Today, two
lines of the Howell family continue to hold family reunions at the cemetery.
In the mid-1900's, a shelter was built, which provides a perfect setting
for the large family gatherings. Descendants still gather four times a year to maintain the cemetery. (Volunteers are always welcomed--1st Saturday in May, Last Saturday in June, 1st Saturday in August, 1st Saturday in October.) |

Listing of Marked Graves at Old Macedonia Cemetery The names on the grave sites listed below begin from the front of the cemetery. They are not alphabetized so as to assist in seeing the proximity of the graves to each other. If you are looking for a specific name, try using the brower's "FIND" option. Hold down the CTRL key, and type the letter F. When you are given a box, type in ONE word and then click on the FIND NEXT button. The link on the right of each listing that says "photo" will take you to a picture of the tombstone. There are many graves marked only with fieldstones. Those are not listed, but are surely more members of these families. The notes with red in the "Inscription/Notes" section are from family history, and are provided for genealogical research. However, there may be mistakes. Please let me know if some of this information is incorrect. The site is still under construction. Plans are for more photos to be added later. Information provided for research
purposes only. Do not copy and paste on other websites.
If any of the links to photos do not work, please let me know so that I may fix them. CLICKING ON THE WORD "PHOTO" WILL OPEN
A NEW BROWSER WINDOW. (This section is under construction. Some of the links have not be created yet.) Some known history follows the cemetery listings. |
