The Graveyard Shift

Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia

Inscription:

FRONT: "Georgia Harris - who though born a slave, died the child of a King."

BACK: "In loving memory of our colored mammy."

I was very touched by the story of this particular person. Georgia Harris was a black woman who worked for the Boyd family of Atlanta for many years.
Because of the regulations in place at the time (late 1800s/early 1900s), Oakland, like many city cemeteries, had designated areas for burials. Oakland's three areas were "the Jewish section," "the black section," and the general section.
The Boyd family so loved Ms. Harris, they wanted her buried in their family plot in the general section. They had to get special permission from the city and the neighboring lot owners. (The Boylston family near them did the same thing.)
